classic baby beanie

catimini
sweet little dress from french label catimini (brand new with labels still attached!) found at savers for $2.99 - craziness. it's gorgeous but not something i would have thought i'd buy due to the overt girlyness but for $2.99 - come on.

here is the pattern i made up for the above sweet baby beanie, which measures about 15.5cm (6") across the brim and is about 12.5cm (5") tall when finished. i'm a pretty novice knitter, buy most of my yarn at thrift shops and pretty much never do a gauge swatch so i have no real idea of yarn weights - the cotton yarn i used for this is about 1-2mm thick. this is a pretty basic pattern and i've tried to write it out as simply as i can so hopefully it's useful to someone who might be tackling their first beanie project - any questions, just leave me a comment or drop me an email. i used double pointed needles but you could use the same pattern on 2 needles and just sew up the seam, instructions for using 2 needles are in italics.

on 4mm needles (US 6, UK 8), cast on 72 stitches.

knit a double rib pattern (2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, and repeat until the end of each row) for about 1.5cm (a little more than half an inch).

then knit in stockinette stitch (on double pointed needles, this means just doing a knit stitch on all rows but on 2 needles you'll need to alternate one knit row with one purled row) for about 7cm (2.75") (ending on a purl row if using 2 needles).

to start the decrease, knit 7 stitches normally, then knit 2 stitches together and repeat this pattern to the end of the row.

knit the next row as normal (purl the next row if using 2 needles).

now knit 6 stitches normally, then knit 2 stitches together, and repeat this pattern to the end of the row.

knit the next row as normal (purl the next row if using 2 needles).

now knit 5 stitches normally, then knit 2 stitches together, and repeat this pattern to the end of the row.

knit the next row as normal (purl the next row if using 2 needles).

continue decreasing in the same manner until you have 4 or 5 stitches left on your needle, then bind it off and voila! or bind it off, sew it up and voila!

made the hat!! i sent it to germany for my new nephew and his mammy love it so much she wants to send me wool to make more! she says it fits better than the bought ones! i used sublime extra fine merino wool dk (listed gauge: 22st28r for 4x4")on 4.5mm needles. i didn't do a swatch, and i knit in the round. i actually weaved in the ends on the bus into work, so i could post it at break time. thanks for the tutorial! (it took me 30 minutes of intensive googling to find it again to post the comment, you should put it on your tutorial link list, i'm sure lots of knitters would enjoy it! )
